A Summer Surprise from God

God has a wonderful way of answering our prayers.  I firmly believe in that because I can't get enough of experiencing God's awesome and mighty ways of surprising me with blessings beyond my wildest expectations.

Early this year, I was already preparing for another trip to Sablayan, Mindoro.   I thought I'd pack my bags come holy week and join my bubbly church friends to DJ Beach Besort and Pandan Island, where we spent seven full days last year enjoying crystal-clear blue waters and white sand beaches.  That part of Occidental Mindoro was quite raw and undiscovered, but it was very beautiful, and I wanted to relive my very good experiences in that part of our country.

However, our graduation was set for April 5, a Monday, and I couldn't definitely be absent from this affair, being the Chair of the Program Committee.  I couldn't take an earlier vacation leave either, because even as of this writing, our plans for the big day aren't yet final.  So I kissed all hopes of going out-of-town this year and resigned myself to the fact that I'll be waiting for another year to sunbathe and snorkel in Southern Luzon, or anywhere outside of Manila, as all of my friends are pushing through with their beach outings minus me.

But God had other plans.

One night I went home very tired and very stressed out. I was ready to plunk down on my bed and forego my dinner, when mom popped the question:  "Would you like to go with me to Boracay for the holy week?  Three days, two nights".
Would I like?  But of course!  Who wouldn't refuse such an offer?

I forgot all about office bickerings, politics, and all the stresses that came with them, and sat down on my pc to scout for the available flights that would make our dream vacation true.  Cebu Pacific and PAL were already fully-booked, while others charged way too expensive for our budget.  Thankfully, we found early morning bookings with Zest Airways.  For about Php 3000++, we had our round-trip airfare deals sealed.  Yey!

So we got the airfare covered.  But what about the accomodations?  Well, this is one where I was totally floored by the goodness of God.  Wonder of wonders, we are going to stay at Fairways and Bluewater, a triple A resort in Newcoast, Boracay, just a stone's throw from Puka Beach and D'Mall at Station 1.  Fairways and Bluewater boasts of being the only resort with an exclusive cove and closely guarded, privately secured, perimetered white beach front.  It has a par 72, 18-hole golf course, an athletic field / beach soccer, and volleyball areas.  The resort owners proudly claim to have the largest fresh water swimming pool, and if that is not enough, it also has a horseback riding field and trails ---- talk about bringing Tagaytay to Aklan!  The place also has a chapel, a natural cave, an open-air amphitheatre and park, a spa (!), all terrain vehicle field (ATV), and a zipline!  Click here and here to read more about zipline, and why backpackers and tourists are raving about it.

God just keeps raising the bar when it comes to surprising me.  Did you know that for all the first-class, triple A facilities I mentioned that we'd be enjoying in Bora, we paid a mere Php 4, 410 per night for the hotel?  We were given 40% discount on accomodation, and where on earth can you find a deal like that when it's supposed to be peak season? God is truly good and great!  I'm really just amazed at how He orchestrated everything for me to enjoy all these perks.

In six days, I'll finally be seeing the famed Bora sunset and feel the white powdery sand on my feet.  I am just so thankful to God for this pleasant, unexpected summer surprise.  It's far better what I have ever planned and conceived, and truly, when it comes to Him, I can only imagine!

Take me to paradise:  Did you know that in the native language of the Aklanon tribes, the word "bora" means cotton, in honor of the soft, powdery sands of the island?
I'd be glad to walk these shorelines!
It'll be nice to pray, meditate and read the Bible in a beautiful place like this!
I'd like to go island-hopping and have my picture taken in this place.
How's that for a view?
This magnificent sunset reminds me of God's pleasant surprise for me this summer.

My dream bookshelf, a snapshot and a trip down memory lane

I've been way too busy the past few days. But anyhow...

The books and my dream bookshelf

In 29 days, 2008 will have gone by. Hello, 2009! Whew! In three weeks' time, we're having our Christmas party. We won't be having classes on the 5th, and work is officially off on the 19th. Yey! That means I have lots of days to spend curled up in bed, reading whatever I fancy at the moment --- something that I've been raring to do but just couldn't.

I felt so jurassic last week listening to my students discuss the merits and demerits of Stephenie Meyer's hit vampire series, Twilight (That book was turned into a movie. Doh! I'm the last to know about that.). My gosh, I think the last (and worst, if I may add) paperback I've ever held was Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code (Eeks! This is one of our worst purchases. Mama bought this book for me out of curiosity, especially when there was a series on Apologetics being taught at CCF. Hay! My comment? Great writers take time building up the plot and giving life to the characters. I was really so turned off with how Dan handled the imagery and desciptions that after page 2, I put away the book.). Since then, my eye problem started acting up again, so my reading sprees were limited to just the newspapers or the devotionals given to me by Ying and Kuya Julius (Streams in the Desert by LB Cowman and James Reimann and Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby).

My friend Matthew just sent me a pair of magnifying glasses, so I thought I could use 'em during the holidays (reading can also be a good excuse not to overeat during reunions, hahaha!!). And my goodness! I have boxes upon boxes of books waiting for my eyes to even cast a glance at them! Claire lovingly gave me a hardbound copy of The Ringmaster's Daughter by Jostein Gaarder, and I promised myself that once I am well, I am going to read that book in one sitting. Paula Rineheart, author of the amazing tear-jerker of a book, Strong Women, Soft Hearts, has come up with yet another amazing book entitled Better than My Dreams: Finding What You Long For Where You Might Not Think to Look. I almost bought the New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom on a recent trip to National Bookstore-Sta. Lucia but I just felt so guilty about making another purchase when I still have unread material at home. There's tons of Max Lucado books, two Joel Osteen paperbacks, and a host of John Maxwell motivational and leadership softbound copies waiting for me. Have I also mentioned that there's a couple of Elizabeth Elliot, John Eldredge, Bruce Wilkinson and Les Parrot books in my reading list? Early this year, I made a vow to be a little bit openminded about my reading choices. So even though the title sounds so egoistical, I started reading chapters from Robert Greene's 48 Laws of Power (devilish, cunning and manipulative!), which I plan to follow-up with Sun Tzu's The Art of War. And yes, I've always loved biographies (Whoever borrowed my Jackie O and Princess Diana biographies, please return them to me!!!!), so I hope I could squeeze in my two Go, Negosyo books this Christmas break. Theology has always fascinted me, and though I'm not the seminarista type, I would love to hold in my hands one of the N.T. Wright books Kuya Luis keeps talking about (Me? Read heavy theological stuff? Yes, it's so un-me. Well, let me try for a change!).

Okay, okay. I'm getting a bit giddy and excited here thinking of which book to read first. Speaking of books, I saw this beautiful bookshelf in Domino and I can't wait for the holidays to roll in so I can attempt to re-arrange my books to look something like this.

Cute noh?

Hay. In the meantime, please excuse me. I've got to read this research / reference book for my lecture tomorrow. :-)

*****

Shot on the spot.

My friend and schoolmate Enchie tagged me for this unique mini-entry.

The story behind the shot:

I was testing my newly-bought webcam's capabilities, and shot this pic one night while I was tinkering with the new gizmo (Say nyo? Di ko na kayang ulitin yan at ayaw na nya gumana hahaha!!!!). Well, as you can see, I've got shorter hair now (cut to shoulder-length) + bangs.

The siopao look is still there, though :-( Perhaps my reading fantasies for the Christmas break would solve the problem hehehe

I'm tagging Kate, Claire, Mavie, and all you bloggers out there. C'mon, it's just a simple write-up :-)

A trip down memory lane: Coincidence?

There used to be a time when I would dream dreams or see some 'visions' which would eventually materialize. Or give hypothetical advice that would almost always turn out to be true. But that would only work for other people. It never worked for me or my loved ones.

And then I saw this picture in one of the folders in my laptop.

Can you see the guy third from left, beside the lady in dark pink gown? That's my dad. Yes, he was the one I was talking about in this blog, and yes, I rightly predicted / sensed / felt the exact day he was going to pass away.

I think I'm having goosebumps as I write this blog. I have been dreaming dreams again lately...

sweat glands and gym trips

I'm totally missing it. Going to the gym, I mean.

Before doctors found out I have eale's disease, I was a constant presence in the gym. I knew the names of all the trainers, and even their schedules. I knew which workout routines work best with my target program, and which ones do not. I knew what type of music plays at a certain hour, and what specific time the gym is overcrowded. I knew all the machines there waiting to be used by gym rats and afficionados. I knew every name of every muscle, and which types of workout to bring out the best from them. I knew every stretching technique there is. I knew every single relevant bodybuilder you have in the books. I knew every bodybuilding and fitness event there is on the planet. And the list goes on and on...

My, I could even be a fitness instructor! Having gym buffs for brothers and a brother-in-law and a sister who are also fitness-conscious also helped a lot to instill in me my instant liking to the gym, the smell of steel, and the feel of iron bars in my hand.

Sadly, I can no longer do heavy workouts. No more running, no more jumping, no more high impact exercises for me. :0( In short, I have to say adios to the old gym life I used to lead. Otherwise, I run the risk of losing my eyesight and going blind.

But at least I have one consolation: no more weirdo looking at me lustfully while I'm doing my squats.

Dhabong heart Len

We knew this was going to happen. Yes, way back in our high school days. We even had a "bet" who will the first to marry, and unanimously we said it was going to be our friend Len, who at that time, was already being hotly pursued by her "kainisan at first sight", Dhabong.

It's going to be Len's bridal shower tonight, and in two weeks' time, she' going to be Mrs. Henri S. Fernandez. Yey!

Best wishes, Len. We hope you'll have a lasting and godly union!

sporadic spurts and the whole US economic hullaballoo

Yes, she sporadically updates her blog. But she makes a fine journalist.

Thanks to Katie for her blog award for me. Please do visit her website at http://katecancio.blogspot.com/.

How's that for a plug? :0p

*****
Okay, I admit I can be an apolitical mademoiselle at times. Sure, I love to hear and sometimes participate in discussions on Philippine politics and tradpols, especially when it's my brother-in-law giving me a rundown of the latest on the who's who here in RP. But I don't know. I'm just not that interested in analyzing the pros and cons of electing so and so, and forging alliances with such and such party. So, being the apolitical that I am, I rarely catch the newscast at night (as I'd rather listen to Ed Lapiz around the same time the news is being broadcast).

And so I was probably one of the last to react about this whole US economic thing. Everyone's talking about it in the office, except clueless me who'd rather plug in my earphones and bury my head in the pile of paperwork on my desk. Lehman Brothers, AIG, Merrill Lynch ---- I seriously thought they're a new bunch of singers out to take over the Billboard 100. My, I don't even know a thing about Wall Street, Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac. I supposedly did well in my high school and college Econ classes, but these days I can't even remember how mortgage works, much more give the repercussions of going through a federal bailout. All these Econ mumbo jumbo I hear from officemates and read about in the papers suddenly sound like Russian to my ears. I get a headache out of trying to get my mom, sister or eldest brother explain to me the implications of the recent economic hullaballoo in the USA (and they're too impatient to explain the details to me too! hehehe).
Sigh.

Then it dawned on me yesterday.

Given all that's happening now, is this good bye to my dreams of going to America?  :-(
